Deep pour epoxy and table top epoxy solve two completely different problems, and using one where you need the other is one of the most common β and most expensive β mistakes we see in our shop. Deep pour epoxy is formulated to cure slowly in thick castings without overheating, while table top epoxy is a thicker-viscosity coating designed for surface work at ΒΌ inch or less. Understand that single distinction and almost every other decision in your epoxy project falls into place.
Why the Chemistry Actually Matters
Epoxy cures through an exothermic reaction β it generates heat as the resin and hardener cross-link. In a thin coat spread across a tabletop, that heat dissipates harmlessly into the air. Pack the same formula into a thick river-table void and you have a problem: heat builds at the center of the mass, accelerating the cure, which generates still more heat. The result can be cracking, yellowing, warping, or a pour that smokes and ruins the slab underneath. Deep pour formulas use slower-reacting hardeners to bleed that heat off gradually β typically 24β72 hours of gel time versus 8β12 hours for a bar top product.
When to Use Deep Pour Epoxy
Deep pour epoxy has a thin viscosity, which allows it to flow freely and self-level deep into voids and channels. In our shop we reach for deep pour whenever:
- River tables and voids exceed ΒΌ inch depth. If you are encasing a natural void, crack, or channel between two live edge slabs, deep pour is the only safe choice for fills over ΒΌ inch deep. For river tables we typically pour 1β2 inches at a time; smaller castings can go up to 4 inches per pour.
- You are casting embedments. Flowers, coins, photographs, or decorative objects all need the slow, controlled cure of a deep pour formula so heat does not scorch or bubble around them.
- You want optically clear interior thickness. Deep pour systems are engineered for clarity through significant depth. Table top formulas will turn cloudy, yellow, or crack when pushed past their designed depth.
- You are filling a large void in stages. Even with deep pour epoxy, deeper voids should be done in layers β let each reach a firm gel before adding the next. This manages heat and keeps bubble migration under control.

When to Use Table Top (Bar Top) Epoxy
Table top β sometimes called bar top β epoxy is the finish coat. It has a thicker viscosity than deep pour, which helps it self-level beautifully on a flat surface without running off edges. Once your deep pour is fully cured and sanded flush, this is what goes on top to create a hard, durable, clear surface. It is designed for applications at ΒΌ inch or less. Use it for:
- Sealing and protecting a finished surface. Bar tops, countertops, and tabletops all benefit from a two-coat bar top application that resists moisture, mild chemicals, and everyday abrasion.
- Locking in color work. If you have applied mica powder pigments or painted artwork onto a slab, a bar top coat locks that work under a glassy, scratch-resistant layer.
- Thin applications on smaller pieces. Charcuterie boards, serving platters, and decorative panels are great candidates for a bar top coat. Keep in mind that bar top epoxy is specifically designed for thin pours at ΒΌ inch or less β if you are considering deep pour for a thin application on a smaller piece, it is a perfectly valid choice. Deep pour will not yellow in a thin application; it will simply take longer to cure than bar top would. Either product can work β just understand what each is designed for and choose accordingly.

The Most Common Mistakes We See
1. Using bar top epoxy to fill a river table. We get calls about this regularly. Someone pours Β½ inch of bar top into a void, it heats up, cracks down the center, and now they have ruined a $600 slab. Do not do this.
2. Using deep pour epoxy as a finish coat. Deep pour formulas cure slowly, and that slow cure creates two real problems on a finished surface: the surface stays softer than bar top and scratches easily, and because deep pour has a thinner viscosity it does not self-level as effectively as bar top does on a flat surface β meaning you are more likely to end up with an uneven finish. Always top-coat with bar top.
3. Not sealing the slab before the river pour. Raw wood is porous. Skip the seal coat β a thin brush-on layer of bar top epoxy, fully cured β and air trapped in the wood will escape upward through your fresh pour as bubbles. Seal first, always.
4. Ignoring temperature. Both formulas are sensitive to ambient and wood temperature. Below 70Β°F the cure slows dramatically and you can end up with a soft, tacky surface. Above 85Β°F the bar top cure accelerates and working time shrinks. We work in a climate-controlled shop and recommend you do the same.
Pigments, Color, and Clarity
For a colored river table, we typically add mica powder pigments to the deep pour β our shop stocks 84 colors, so matching a specific look is usually straightforward. Metallic colors like gold, copper, and black are popular in river work right now. For a clear river with color only on the surface, we add pigment to the bar top final coat instead. The deep pour stays water-clear and the color sits on top, creating a layered depth effect that photographs well. Mica powder is compatible with both formulas β which layer you color is a purely aesthetic call.
FAQ
Can I mix deep pour and bar top epoxy together?
No. Mixing the two changes the chemistry of both and produces unpredictable results β improper cure, softness, or cloudiness. Use each product as designed, in the right sequence: deep pour for fills, bar top for the finish coat.
How many coats of bar top epoxy does a tabletop need?
Two coats is the correct answer. The first is a sealing layer β plan on roughly 4 oz per square foot β which locks down the wood grain and prevents bubbles from migrating up through the surface. The second is the flood coat that builds your final gloss and protective thickness, and that coat runs closer to 10 oz per square foot. Sand lightly with 220-grit between coats and you will end up with a hard, glassy finish.
How long do I wait between the deep pour cure and applying the bar top coat?
Wait until your deep pour is fully hard β not just gel-set. For our W2A Deep Pour formula that is typically 48β72 hours at 72Β°F. Sand the surface flush with the slab, wipe clean, then apply bar top. Applying bar top over a soft deep pour traps softness underneath and you will never get a fully hard surface.
Do I need to sand between coats of bar top epoxy?
Yes, if more than 24 hours have passed since the previous coat. Within the adhesion window β while the first coat is still slightly tacky β you can apply the second coat without sanding. Beyond that window, a light 220-grit scuff ensures mechanical adhesion between layers.
