For a typical two-slab river table with a channel roughly 72 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 1.5 inches deep, you need about 864 cubic inches of epoxy β right at 479 fluid ounces, or about 15 quarts (about 3.75 gallons) of mixed resin before waste or overage buffer. That's the short answer. The longer answer depends on your exact channel dimensions, how many pours your depth requires, and how you account for wood absorption and overage. Read on for the full calculation method, a worked example, and the mistakes that send people back to the store for more.
Why the Volume Math Matters
Running out of epoxy mid-pour isn't just annoying β it's a project killer. Fresh epoxy bonds to cured epoxy only with proper surface prep, and even then you can see the seam in certain lighting. Over-ordering is the safer sin, but pouring leftover catalyzed epoxy down the drain is wasteful and environmentally wrong. In our shop we land as close to exact as we can, then add a deliberate 20% overage buffer. That buffer accounts for more than just spills and mixing bucket waste β the epoxy also has to fill the thin gap between the bottom of the wood slabs and the mold surface, as well as the perimeter channel around the entire mold. On top of that, as the river epoxy cures it pulls the two slabs slightly inward (river shrinkage), which can expand the visible channel width by as much as 1/8 inch, requiring a bit more resin than your original measurement suggested. Get the math right and that 20% covers all of it. Get it wrong and you're short by a gallon.
The Core Formula
Epoxy volume is just the volume of the void you're filling. Use this sequence:
- Measure your channel in inches: Length Γ Width Γ Depth. If your channel tapers or curves, break it into sections and add them together.
- Convert to cubic inches: That multiplication already gives you cubic inches.
- Convert to fluid ounces: 1 cubic inch = 0.554 fluid ounces. Multiply your cubic inches by 0.554.
- Convert to quarts or gallons: 32 fl oz = 1 quart; 128 fl oz = 1 gallon.
- Add 20% overage: Multiply your total by 1.20. This covers spills, mixing bucket waste, the thin layer of epoxy that fills between the slab bottoms and the mold, the perimeter of the mold, and any channel widening caused by river shrinkage pulling the slabs together during cure.

Worked Example: A 6-Foot Dining Table
Say you have two bookmatched slabs from our slab inventory and the river channel between them is:
- Length: 68 inches (the slabs are 72" but the channel doesn't run full edge-to-edge)
- Width: 7 inches average (measure in three spots and average them)
- Depth: 1.75 inches (slab thickness after milling)
Step 1 β Cubic inches: 68 Γ 7 Γ 1.75 = 833 cubic inches
Step 2 β Fluid ounces: 833 Γ 0.554 = 461.5 fl oz
Step 3 β Quarts: 461.5 Γ· 32 = 14.4 quarts
Step 4 β Add 20% overage: 14.4 Γ 1.20 = 17.3 quarts
Order two 1-gallon kits (8 quarts each = 16 quarts total) plus one additional quart kit to cover your buffer. For most dining tables in that size range, that combination is exactly where we land when customers bring us their measurements.
How Many Pours Does Your Channel Require?
Our W2A Deep Pour epoxy handles single pours up to 2 inches thick. If your channel is 2 inches or shallower, one pour covers it and the volume calculation above is your total order. For a thicker table β 2.5 or 3 inches deep β you'll need two pours, so calculate each layer separately.
Split the total depth into two roughly equal layers and run the same formula on each. Pour the second layer after the first reaches a firm gel but before it fully cures β the "green stage" window, usually 16β24 hours depending on shop temperature. Your total epoxy volume doesn't change, but knowing you're doing two pours helps you plan mixing batches and avoid catalyzing more than you can place in one session.
Shop temperature matters too. Our W2A Deep Pour formula generates heat as it cures. In a hot Florida shop in July, keep pours thinner rather than pushing the maximum depth β heat cracking is a real risk. Work between 70Β°F and 80Β°F for best results.
Common Mistakes That Blow Your Epoxy Budget
- Not sealing the wood first. Raw wood is porous. A thin seal coat brushed onto the channel walls before your deep pour keeps the wood from drinking your resin before it cures.
- Building a leaky mold. We build our molds from 3/4" birch plywood β it's stable, flat, and holds fasteners well. Line every interior surface with clear packing tape or Tyvek tape, then run a bead of silicone along every seam, inside and outside. A leak mid-pour wastes resin and can ruin your slab setup, so don't skip the silicone.
- Averaging an uneven channel too loosely. A channel that's 5 inches at the waist and 11 inches at the ends is not 8 inches wide on average β measure in five spots and use the true average, or break it into sections.
- Ignoring voids in the slabs themselves. American domestic slabs like walnut and laurel often have live edge voids, knot holes, and checks that also need filling. Estimate those separately and add them to your total.
- Miscounting the mix ratio. Our W2A Deep Pour epoxy mixes at a specific ratio by volume β follow the label exactly. Eyeballing it causes soft spots that never fully cure, and no amount of sanding fixes that.
FAQ
How long does unmixed W2A Deep Pour epoxy stay good in the jug?
Stored sealed, out of direct sunlight, at room temperature, our W2A Deep Pour epoxy has a shelf life of about 12 months from manufacture. Don't store it in a hot garage over a Florida summer β heat accelerates crystallization in the resin side.
My channel is irregularly shaped. How do I measure it accurately?
Fill it with water (dam in place, slabs level) and measure the water with a pitcher. That's your exact volume. Dry the channel completely before pouring β moisture causes fisheyes and cloudiness.
Do I need to account for colorant volume?
Our mica powder pigments load at roughly 1β3% by weight of mixed epoxy. At that ratio they add negligible volume β no need to adjust your calculations. Weigh your pigment against your mixed batch and you're set.
