Hardwood lumber is sold by the board foot: a piece 1" thick, 12" wide and 12" long.
Your lumber
Not sure? Pick the cut list and enter the sizes your parts will be when done; we'll figure the rough lumber.
Rough lumber is sold by nominal thickness in quarter inches: 4/4 ("four-quarter") is 1", 6/4 is 1-1/2", 8/4 is 2". We figure board feet on that nominal thickness. One board foot = 1" × 12" × 12".
Enter finished sizes in inches (what each part measures when it's done). Use decimals: 3/4" = 0.75, 1-1/2" = 1.5. For each piece we add 1/8" to the thickness and round up to the next thickness we stock in that species (thicker parts become a glue-up), then add 1/4" to the width and 1" to the length for milling and trim.
