Wood Species Guide
Black Walnut
Juglans nigra
Also called: American Walnut, American Black Walnut, Eastern Black Walnut, Walnut
What Black Walnut looks like
The heartwood runs from a milk-chocolate brown to a deep, almost purple brown, sometimes with gray or reddish streaks. The sapwood is a creamy pale tan, and the contrast between the two is a big part of walnut's live-edge appeal. Unlike many woods, walnut tends to lighten slightly and warm toward a golden brown with years of sunlight.
Grain and texture
Usually straight grain with a medium texture and a soft natural luster. Crotches, burls and the area near the root flare can show curl, feather and wild figure that is prized in table tops.
Working Black Walnut: planing, cutting and gluing
One of the friendliest hardwoods in the shop. It planes clean, cuts without fuss, holds screws well and glues with standard yellow glue. Figured sections can tear out, so take light final passes or switch to a sander. It also steam-bends well if you ever need curved parts.
Finishing Black Walnut: oil, film finishes and epoxy
Walnut looks finished the moment oil touches it. A hardwax oil such as Osmo deepens the color without a plastic look, and it takes lacquer, varnish and water-based topcoats well. For epoxy, seal the slab first: the open pores and any punky sapwood will outgas and throw bubbles into a pour. Fine walnut dust can also discolor a light or white epoxy fill, so vacuum and wipe well before pouring.
Durability, stability and Florida humidity
The heartwood rates as fairly durable against decay but it is still an indoor furniture wood in our climate. It is a stable wood with moderate movement once dry. In Florida, let slabs acclimate in an air-conditioned space for a week or two and finish both faces equally so the slab doesn't cup when humidity swings.
Shop notes from our Fort Myers shop
We carry walnut as live-edge slabs and rough-sawn lumber, and it is the slab most customers picture when they say 'live edge'. It flattens nicely on the CNC, the bark usually comes off cleanly, and we generally leave a little sapwood on the edge for contrast. Walnut makes a classic river table with black, blue or clear epoxy; seal coat it first. Pair it with maple or white oak when you want a two-tone look.
Common uses for Black Walnut
Dining and conference tables, live-edge desks and bar tops, river tables, cabinets, gunstocks, turned bowls, cutting boards, and fine furniture and trim.
Sustainability and CITES status
Not listed in the CITES Appendices. The IUCN Red List rates it as Least Concern. Walnut comes from managed North American forests and is widely available.
