Wood Species Guide: groups

Walnuts

Walnut is the benchmark for dark, rich furniture wood. It machines cleanly, sands to a soft sheen and takes oil beautifully, which is why black walnut slabs are some of the most requested pieces in our Fort Myers shop. Black walnut is the American classic, with chocolate heartwood, a pale sapwood band and live edges that look great under clear epoxy. Butternut, sometimes called white walnut, is its lighter, softer cousin, easy to carve and now scarce because of a disease that has killed many trees. Peruvian walnut comes from South American walnut species and runs darker and more even in color than black walnut, often at a lower price per board foot. All three share the same easygoing working properties, so if you like one you will usually like the others. Use the species pages below to compare hardness, color and price, and check the in-stock list before you plan a project around a particular slab.
