4/4 Leopardwood

Leopardwood lumber, kiln-dried and rough sawn, sold by the board foot in Fort Myers, FL. Lighter ray flecks scattered across a reddish brown face create the spotted pattern that gives this import hardwood its name. It is a hard, heavy wood from Central and South America and a favorite for small pieces you will see up close.

Every leopardwood board is rough sawn in random widths and lengths, offered in 4/4 (1 inch nominal) thickness. Price is per board foot. The leopard pattern is strongest on quartersawn faces; flatsawn boards show thinner lines, so pick in person if the pattern is the point.

Working with Leopardwood

• Hard, and the large rays chip and tear out when planed, especially on quartersawn faces. Take shallow passes with sharp knives or use a drum sander.
• Glues well and turns cleanly, which makes it a good pen and turning wood.
• Finishes well with oil or film finishes. Sand carefully between coats, because the rays can stand slightly proud. Seal before epoxy.
• Fairly stable once dry and does fine indoors in Florida with normal acclimating. We wouldn't put it outdoors uncovered.
